"We were getting smoked by these guys from Europe and we didn’t like it. We were willing to push the envelope and see what happened, that’s how we learned. How did we find out we were going as fast as we could? We ran and ran until we crashed, and then we just backed it off a little bit." Well that's the spirit, Mr. Burritto! ( yes, with double T's) Gene Romero, "Team Mexican" and a "1"on his helmet and the looks of Elvis but way cooler. The ladies knew it, he knew it, but all that was just fun and games. On track, he was a Pitbull and the career wins to show for it: 12 AMA National titles, joined by a Grand National in 1970 and two second places in the mythical Daytona 200, which he then won in 1975 on a Yamaha TZ750. The 4th in my Daytona co-op series and the last for the moment. Gene on his slick Triumph Trident, revving the valves out of it and keeping it pinned all day long. You really should watch some Romero interviews on YouTube, people. When you hear his stories and what he went through at times but never gave up....2 things always jump to the foreground : His smile and just the amount of fun talking about all of it. I think he lived a fun life doing his thing and having everyone enjoy it with him. Thanks "Burritto" for being a legend!
