"I truly felt in my heart that I was going to win the race. I don’t mean that I thought I could win, but I felt that I would win." What kind of man do you have to be and what kind of mindset do you need to say this. Going against an armada of exotic 750cc race bikes on your little Yamaha 350 2-stroke. Oh yes, did I say he was a privateer? That is what Don Emde did in 1972. He said it and he just won the Daytona 200 like his dad years before in 1948. The Daytona win was probably the highest achievement for Emde after success in flat tracking and being a very respectable 250cc road racer. After Daytona things seemed not to work out for Don like things should when you aim for wins. That never stopped him being successful in business and also excelling at writing.
I designed the Emde print running on the mighty BSA triple in the days the Triumph-BSA co-op was not just another go at "some" winning, but more like a go at destroying everyone else's dream of being a champion. And don't they look awesome in red! Don Emde, you are a legend, my man! And he uses my drawing as his Facebook avatar, how cool is that!
